Love these before and after images of Shakespeare’s home, Stratford upon Avon. Born 1564, he lived here with his parents, John & Mary, and his seven siblings. After marrying Anne Hathaway in 1582, when just 18 years old & 8 years her junior, they remained here with his family with change arriving only when his father died in 1601. The house remained in the family, serving periodically as the Maidenhead Inn (later Swan & Maidenhead Inn) until 1846/7, by then having passed to a local butcher named Court who too gave it up for sale after death. The second picture thus shows the same building following its restoration in 1864 by new owners, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust who, through charitable funding and supported by Charles Dickens, had purchased the house some 17 years before. Rescuing an Elizabethan delight that still exudes admiration, fame and visitor obsession! #history #authors #scanned #artdrawing #creatives #art #drawings #events #people #places #shakespeare #stratforduponavon #architecture #architecturelovers #elizabethan #playwright
