Edward Thompson Davis’ illustration, reproduced as a c1870 engraving in the 'Art Journal' of that year, showing three ‘peasant children’ heading to school. Note the book held open and the rainbow & church tower tucked to the right beyond the haystacks. Davis was a largely unknown Worcester-born artist, sculptor & print maker until the 1950s, when fame came posthumously having died in Rome in 1867, probably from cholera. He was aged just 34 years.
