SIR ROBERT PEEL of course gave us the modern police office, or “peeler”. Less known perhaps is that it almost cost him his life. Woodturner Daniel M’Naghten, with a history of mental health issues, assassinated his Personal Secretary, Edward Drummond, by virtue of mistaken identity - he believed he was killing Peel who he blamed for xxxxxx. The case led to a new legal defence of criminal insanity and brought into being the infamous M’Naghten Rules.
