7th Earl of Cardigan who ‘led’ the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War of 1854. With Empirical jingoism, he was greeted as a hero on his return and his ways and mores were often aspired to. Including the ‘knitted’ short jacket sported in this picture – the humble cardigan! He wore controversy equally well, apparently buying his careers, womanising, stubborn & ‘cheating’ in a duel that saw him escape prosecution on a legal technicality (the charge used his victim’s official title, not his full name).
